Nigeria Evacuates 500+ Citizens From South Africa Safely

More than 500 Nigerians will soon be safely home thanks to a swift government evacuation plan from South Africa, where xenophobic tensions have created fear for foreign nationals.

President Bola Tinubu approved five Air Peace flights to bring citizens home voluntarily, with the first aircraft scheduled to depart Johannesburg Monday evening carrying about 270 passengers. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended screening through Wednesday to accommodate everyone who wants to leave.

"So far, over 500 persons have been screened and cleared," said ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa on Sunday. The screening process, conducted at Nigeria's High Commission in Pretoria, helps verify citizens and coordinate safe departure.

The evacuation follows rising tensions in parts of South Africa, where attacks and threats against foreign nationals have forced some migrants into temporary shelters. While the situation remains serious, both governments are working together on the solution.

South African authorities have condemned the violence and promised security action against those targeting foreigners unlawfully. Nigerian officials are maintaining diplomatic talks to protect citizens who choose to remain in the country.
