Nigeria Launches Program to Build Economy Beyond Oil

The Nigeria Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance Fund Programme kicked off Thursday in Abuja, bringing together government leaders, development partners, and community organizations to chart a new path forward.

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Abubakar Bagudu struck a refreshingly honest tone at the launch. "We have missed historic opportunities," he acknowledged. "We can learn from those lessons so that we can do better."

The minister emphasized that growth pursued the wrong way could damage the environment in ways future generations won't forgive. Instead, Nigeria aims to support its farmers, fishers, miners, and artisans with science, technology, and skills to create value responsibly.

Omotenioye Majekodunmi, who leads Nigeria's Climate Change Council, framed the shift as evolution, not retreat. "Nigeria's journey beyond oil is not a retreat from our status as an energy powerhouse, but an evolution into a green energy giant," she said.

The three-year program will strengthen policy foundations, place people at the center of economic planning, and expand opportunities specifically for women and youth. Rural communities across the country will receive targeted support as the nation diversifies its economic base.

This isn't about abrupt change that disrupts livelihoods. The program will analyze transition risks, evaluate green development pathways, and develop policies to support workers and communities affected by energy sector shifts.
