Nigeria Leases 67 Tractors to Farmers at Half Price

Farmers in Nigeria's Enugu State are getting access to modern tractors at less than half the usual cost, thanks to a new government program that's making mechanized farming finally affordable for everyday growers.

The state has already leased 67 tractors to local farmers at 70,000 naira (about $45) per day, compared to the typical commercial rate of 150,000 naira ($95). Commissioner for Agriculture Patrick Ubru announced the milestone during a tour of the state's new Nortra Tractor Assembly Plant this week.

The tractors come equipped with GPS tracking devices that monitor location, mileage, and usage, helping both farmers and the government keep tabs on the equipment. When a tractor breaks down, farmers can simply call the company for quick repairs at the local plant, eliminating the frustrating delays that come with importing parts from overseas.

Enugu has transformed from having zero functional tractors to more than 150 in just a short time. The state government has set an ambitious target of 1,000 tractors, with future machines to be assembled right at the Nortra facility from imported components.

The assembly plant itself represents a major investment in local manufacturing. Managing Director Morten Anderson says the upgraded facility can now assemble 10 tractors daily, with room to expand production even further.

The Ripple Effect

The real magic of this program goes beyond farming equipment. The assembly plant is expected to create 3,500 direct jobs in its first phase, with thousands more indirect opportunities rippling through the community.

About 200 young people are already enrolled in training programs to learn how to operate and maintain the tractors. These skills give youth a viable career path at home, reducing the pressure many feel to seek opportunities abroad.

Farmers across the state are already putting the tractors to work, using them alongside newly acquired implements like harrows, ridgers, ploughs, and trailers. The equipment is helping them cultivate more land in less time, boosting food production across the region.

While the government-leased tractors aren't for sale, Nortra as a private partner can sell machines to individuals who want to own their equipment outright. The company is even building accommodation for engineers and workers at the facility, cutting down on hotel costs and keeping operations efficient.

The program shows how smart subsidies and local manufacturing can work together to modernize agriculture while creating jobs and keeping young talent in the community.
