Nigeria Publisher Uses Books to Strengthen Democracy

A Nigerian publishing house is strengthening democracy one book at a time by making stories about power and governance accessible to everyone.

Premium Times Books launched its latest title "The Burden of Legislators in Nigeria" on Saturday, written by former senator Effiong Bob. The book reveals the intense pressures Nigerian lawmakers face from constituents, political godfathers, and government officials.

Musikilu Mojeed, editor-in-chief of Premium Times newspaper, explained the publisher's mission at the launch event. "We believe deeply in the power of stories," he said. "Not gossip or trivia, but consequential stories that help a society understand itself."

The publishing arm was founded on a simple belief: democracy cannot thrive when citizens don't understand how power works and why governance often fails. By documenting these realities, Premium Times Books helps readers see what's broken and what needs fixing.

Bob brings unique credibility to the subject after serving as senator from 2003 to 2011. He previously worked as council chairman, deputy speaker, attorney general, and university chancellor.

His book explores how legislators navigate executive overreach, meddlesome governors, and relentless public demands. These pressures often undermine democratic governance rather than strengthen it.
