A new aeronautics university in Lagos aims to build Nigeria's first indigenous aircraft within a year, designed entirely from scratch by students and international faculty. Nigerian students are about to make history in the skies. Isaac Balami University of Aeronautics and Management in Lagos has set an ambitious goal: build the country's first completely homegrown aircraft by 2027, designed from the ground up by its inaugural class of 60 students.
Founder Isaac Balami isn't talking about copying existing planes. He's talking about original designs created through research and innovation, guided by Nigerian professors with international experience from the UK and US.
"All my classmates from America are building aircraft for their countries, from China, from Germany," Balami said. "So the support we never got, we will give our own children."
The university's vice chancellor, Professor P.O. Jemitola from England, has already designed, assembled, flown and landed an aircraft in Kaduna State. Now he'll guide students through the same process, starting with small four-seater and eight-seater planes.
The vision extends far beyond that first aircraft. Balami sees locally designed planes helping solve Nigeria's security challenges through surveillance of oil pipelines, support for police and navy operations, and assistance for regional security groups like Amotekun.

The university addresses another critical problem: why Nigerian airlines typically struggle after about 10 years. Balami's research during his PhD program in the United States revealed that inconsistent leadership and management gaps doom carriers that promote pilots to executive roles without proper business training.
Students at Isaac Balami University won't just learn to fly or fix planes. They'll spend 1,000 hours in workshops and another 1,000 in hangars, working on everything from engine overhauls to avionics to aircraft design. They'll study aerospace engineering, mechatronics, robotics and systems engineering alongside management courses.
The National Universities Commission has licensed the school to run 11 courses, starting with five programs this year. By graduation at age 21, students will have logged training on two fixed-wing aircraft and two helicopters, ready to work or supervise anywhere in the world.

This isn't just about one university or one aircraft. It's about building an entire aviation ecosystem that Nigeria has never had. When students design that first plane, they'll prove African innovation can compete globally. When graduates take leadership roles, they'll break the cycle of airline failures. And when locally made surveillance aircraft monitor pipelines and borders, they'll demonstrate homegrown solutions to homegrown challenges.
The confidence is infectious. "There is nothing that stops Nigeria from building aircraft," Balami said. "We have all the equipment on the ground. We can do it."
By 2027, the skies above Nigeria might just carry proof that he's right.
