Nigerian University Wins $1.9M in Agriculture & Research Grants

A Nigerian university is proving that investment in agriculture and innovation can unlock doors worldwide.

The Federal University of Technology in Minna, Niger State, has secured three major grants totaling over $1.9 million. The biggest win? A N1 billion agricultural farm grant from TETFund that positions the university among just 10 institutions selected across Nigeria.

Vice Chancellor Faruk Kuta announced the funding during a press briefing on Monday. The timing couldn't be better as Nigeria continues working to strengthen food security and agricultural self-sufficiency.

But the agricultural grant is just the beginning. FUT Minna also attracted $3 million from France's development agency for ICT advancement. A third grant of £15,000 from the United Kingdom will support open access publishing, making Nigerian research available to scholars worldwide.

The university isn't stopping at funding wins. It just launched a new College of Medical Sciences and Health Technology after receiving full approval from the National Universities Commission. Pioneer students started classes this academic year.

These achievements come as FUT Minna prepares to graduate 5,267 students on February 1st. Among them, 111 earned first class honors in undergraduate programs. The graduating class also includes 153 PhD scholars and 633 master's degree recipients.

The Ripple Effect

When universities secure this level of funding, entire communities benefit. The agricultural grant will create a commercial farm that can employ local workers, train future farmers, and test innovative growing methods. Students gain hands-on experience with modern farming techniques they can take back to their home regions.

Vice Chancellor Kuta acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly student housing shortages. But he thanked philanthropists who've stepped up to help ensure most students have accommodation. The university continues working on long-term housing solutions.

The TETFund National Research Fund approved N4.2 billion for 158 research projects across Nigerian universities in 2024. FUT Minna's success in capturing multiple grants shows what happens when institutions prioritize excellence and innovation.
