Nigeria's NDDC Strengthens Anti-Corruption Unit

The Niger Delta Development Commission is betting big on integrity with a newly strengthened Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit designed to restore public trust.

Managing Director Samuel Ogbuku inaugurated the new leadership team at the commission's Port Harcourt headquarters this week. He described the unit as essential for promoting ethical conduct and preventing corruption across the oil-rich Niger Delta region.

"Corruption is a global challenge," Ogbuku told the newly appointed members. "Your integrity must remain unquestionable. If those entrusted with fighting corruption become compromised, everything is at stake."

The commission carefully selected unit members based on competence, credibility, and integrity. They'll work closely with the Internal Audit Department to reinforce accountability across all departments and restore the agency's public image.

The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) has backed the initiative as a crucial step toward strengthening institutional integrity nationwide. The unit was originally established in 2001 but is now getting renewed focus and resources.

What makes this announcement meaningful is the emphasis on prevention over punishment. New unit chairwoman Deinma Ebong explained the team will focus on strengthening systems rather than simply policing staff.

"The unit will promote open communication and collaboration with departments to prevent corruption before it occurs," Ebong said. The approach prioritizes ethics education and continuous awareness building.

The NDDC serves nine oil-producing states in southern Nigeria. For years, corruption allegations have undermined development projects meant to improve lives in communities affected by oil extraction.
