Nordic Countries Lead the World in Charitable Giving

People across Scandinavia are opening their wallets to help others, with charitable giving reaching new heights in 2026.

Norway now leads the Nordic countries in generosity, with 70% of its population donating regularly or occasionally to charities. That's up from 66% just one year ago, according to the Nordic Donor Report 2026.

Sweden saw an even bigger jump, rising from 64% to 69% and overtaking Denmark as the region's second most charitable nation. Denmark held steady at 66%, while Finland recorded 48% of its population giving to good causes.

These numbers put the Nordic countries well above the global average. Worldwide, six in ten people donated money in 2025, whether directly to those in need, to charities, or for religious purposes, according to the World Giving Report 2026.

The Ripple Effect

Nordic generosity extends far beyond personal donations. The five Nordic countries together contributed $3.9 billion to the United Nations system in 2024 alone.

Norway and Sweden each gave approximately $1.4 billion, while Denmark contributed $840 million, Finland $274 million, and Iceland $41 million. These funds support humanitarian assistance, healthcare, and development programs worldwide.

In Iceland, health organizations receive the most support from individual donors at 39%, followed by social services at 29% and international assistance at 25%. Humanitarian aid ranks among the top causes across all Nordic countries.

Globally, giving patterns vary dramatically by region. Africans donate the highest percentage of their income at 1.6%, while Europeans give the lowest at 0.6%, despite higher average incomes.

The numbers show that compassion transcends borders, with people everywhere finding ways to help others in need.
