NY Teen Basketball Team Wins Championship in Utica
A group of high school athletes from rural New York towns joined forces to create a travel basketball team that's now winning championships. The ADK NorthStars just proved that small-town teamwork can compete with anyone.
When teenagers from Massena and Lake Placid decided to form a travel basketball team, they knew the competition would be tough. They just won a championship anyway, going 4-1 in a weekend tournament that brought together some of New York's best young players.
The ADK NorthStars 16U Boys Basketball team traveled to Utica in late March for a competitive weekend of hoops. They defeated teams from Indian River/Lowville, Carthage, Ilion, and Utica to claim the championship trophy.
Their only loss came in a heartbreaker against the Schenectady Shockers, who edged them out by a single point in the final seconds. That narrow defeat didn't slow the team's momentum.
The roster includes Jakob Page, Sean McCauley, Gavin Mitchell, Aaden Tarbell, Wyatt Prescott, Joey Lavare, Max Perez, Andrew Boyea, Josh Hobday, and Alex Tarbell. Coaches Dan Mitchell and Dave McCauley lead the squad.

The team kept rolling the following weekend at the AAU Regional Thoroughbred Classic in Saratoga. They finished with a solid 2-2 record, beating teams from Schroon Lake and Troy while playing competitive games against squads from Binghamton and Glens Falls.
The Ripple Effect
Travel basketball gives young athletes from smaller communities chances they might not otherwise get. These players are gaining exposure to higher levels of competition and building skills that will serve them whether they pursue college athletics or not.
The ADK NorthStars also show what's possible when neighboring towns work together instead of only competing against each other. By combining talent from Massena and Lake Placid, these coaches created opportunities for kids who might have been overlooked on their own.
The team's early success in their 2026 campaign proves that zip codes don't determine talent. When young athletes get the right coaching, support, and opportunities to compete, they can hold their own against anyone.
Next time someone says small-town kids can't compete with big-city programs, the ADK NorthStars have a championship trophy that says otherwise.
