Village Volleyball Tournament Unites Yimkhiung Tribe

When the Catholic Youth Movement in Chessore wanted to honor their ancestors' harvest festival, they grabbed a volleyball net instead of just following tradition.

The group organized a two-day tournament in early August to celebrate Metümnyo, the "Soul Wrapping Feast" that has united the Yimkhiung Naga tribe for generations. Ten teams from across Chessore village competed while honoring a festival traditionally marked by reconciliation, thanksgiving, and strengthening family ties.

Chessore holds special significance as the oldest village of the Yimkhiung tribe, making it the perfect backdrop for blending old and new. The festival typically spans five days following the millet harvest, when families welcome newborns, honor those who have passed, and renew their connections to one another.

"While there were many ways to celebrate a festival, coming together as one family of believers in such a manner was rare," said Throngkiuba, the village's head leader. He urged the community to preserve this spirit of togetherness beyond the tournament.

Church leaders from various denominations joined the celebration, reinforcing the message of unity across differences. Pastors and catechists participated in opening and closing ceremonies, blessing the combination of athletic competition and cultural preservation.

The Ripple Effect

The tournament's impact reached beyond the scoreboard. Youth participants heard encouragement to pursue their dreams with dedication, including a reminder about Spanish footballer Lamine Yamal's rise through hard work and commitment.

Reverend Father David Tithong connected the dots between ancient wisdom and modern celebration. He reminded participants that their forefathers observed Metümnyo not just for fun, but as a time to reconcile differences, express gratitude, and renew community ties.

The event showed younger generations they don't have to choose between honoring tradition and creating new ways to gather. Sports became a bridge between the festival's core values of forgiveness, respect, and shared identity and contemporary youth culture.

President Hikila Dorcas of the Catholic Youth Movement expressed gratitude for the community's support in making the vision reality. Her group proved that fellowship and joyful celebration can take many forms while still honoring what matters most.

The tournament wrapped with prizes for the top three teams, but the real victory was demonstrating how communities can evolve their celebrations without losing their soul.
