Ocean Viking Rescues 14 People Adrift Off Libya

Fourteen people drifting in the Mediterranean without life jackets or a working motor are safe today thanks to the crew of the Ocean Viking rescue ship. The humanitarian vessel responded to a distress call Friday morning and found the unseaworthy rubber boat adrift in the Libyan search and rescue zone.

The survivors include three women and a young girl, with most fleeing the devastating conflicts in Sudan and South Sudan. The Ocean Viking crew traveled overnight to reach them after receiving information from Alarm Phone, an NGO that operates a hotline for people in distress at sea.

When rescuers arrived, they found the inflatable boat had no propeller and no one aboard wore life jackets. The group had spent a full day and night exposed to the elements and fuel fumes before help arrived.

SOS Mediterranee, the nonprofit organization operating the Ocean Viking, reported that all survivors are in stable condition. They're receiving medical care and assistance aboard the ship for exhaustion and the effects of prolonged fuel exposure.
