When retired Lieutenant Gene Eyster rescued a newborn from a cardboard box near Christmas 2000, he never imagined their paths would cross again in the most heartwarming way.

Eyster received an unusual call that December. "That was one of the strangest calls I think I've ever had: 'We have a found baby in a box,'" he recalled.

The officer rushed to the scene and transported the abandoned infant to safety. But his kindness didn't stop there.

Eyster returned to visit the baby, bringing a teddy bear as a symbol that someone cared. He couldn't stomach calling the child "Baby Boy Doe," so he nicknamed him "Baby Jesus" instead.

For 25 years, Eyster wondered what happened to that tiny life he'd saved. "I wondered, 'What did he turn out to be? Was he still alive?'" he often thought.

The answer came in 2024 when fellow Officer Josh Morgan called with stunning news. "You're not going to believe this, but Baby Jesus is sitting next to me right now. He's my rookie," Morgan told the retired officer.

That abandoned infant had grown into Matthew Hegedus-Stewart, a brand new police officer. Even more remarkably, Hegedus-Stewart was patrolling the same neighborhood where he'd been found decades earlier.

This story hits even deeper when you learn the timing. Eyster had recently lost his son when he discovered what became of the baby he saved.

"I see some mannerisms in Matt that remind me of my son. He's got the same grin, the same laugh, the same dark hair and stature," Eyster shared. The reunion brought him unexpected comfort during grief.

Hegedus-Stewart had tracked down his own history growing up and learned about the officer who saved him. When they finally met, they paged through old case files together.

The coincidences keep stacking. Hegedus-Stewart's daughter Aspen shares a birthday with his adoption anniversary.

"The irony of everything falling into place the way it did," Eyster said. "You have a better chance of winning the lottery."

The two men have stayed in close touch since their reunion, proving that sometimes the lives we touch come back to touch ours in the most unexpected ways.
