Ohio Creator Builds 19-Foot Functional Home for $5,000

Levi Kelly of Southern Ohio just built what may be the world's smallest functional home, and it fits on a trailer the size of a parking space.

The 28-year-old content creator spent about a month in 2024 transforming a 3-by-4-foot utility trailer into a miniature dwelling packed with everything a real home needs. His 19.5-square-foot creation includes a fold-down lofted bed, running hot water, a mini fridge, a portable toilet, an outdoor shower, heating, air conditioning, and rooftop solar panels that power it all through a battery bank.

Kelly got inspired after watching videos about another micro-house record holder. He wanted to push the concept further with one key difference: actual functionality.

"I thought I could add my two cents to the space of how small a tiny house can get, but I took a different approach," Kelly told The U.S. Sun. "I wanted it to be actually functional."

The project cost around $5,000 to build, with most expenses going toward the battery setup and AC unit. Kelly and his wife Savannah designed clever space-saving features including a faucet that tucks beneath a cutting-board cover and battery storage hidden under a bench.

The Ripple Effect

While most people won't be downsizing to closet-sized living anytime soon, Kelly's experiment offers real-world solutions for everyday housing challenges. His multipurpose furniture, smart storage, and efficient energy use could transform apartments, guesthouses, and accessory dwelling units.

Building small also means building sustainably. Compact homes require fewer construction materials and dramatically less energy to heat and cool, offering environmental benefits without major lifestyle sacrifices.

Kelly admits the space feels tiny. "When you're standing in there, you can touch all the walls by just reaching out," he said. But he's already thinking bigger, considering plans to sell it, take it on a road trip, or create a slightly larger 30-square-foot version as an Airbnb attraction.

His creation proves that thoughtful design can stretch limited resources further than we imagine.
