Ohio Girls Bounce Back to Win State Softball Title

Thirty minutes can change everything, and for a group of 10-year-old girls in Ohio, that's exactly how long it took to turn heartbreak into glory.

The Canfield Cardinals 10U softball team faced a tough situation Friday at the Fields of Dreams in Boardman. After losing their first championship game 12-8 to Wheelersburg, they had one more shot at the state title. Most teams would crumble under that pressure, but these girls did the opposite.

In the deciding game, Canfield dominated from the first pitch. Brooklyn Eubanks, Gray Brown, and Layla Potkanowicz all scored in the opening inning, setting the tone for what became an 11-2 victory and a state championship.

"Just continue to be themselves," coach John Grover told his team between games. He knew his players had the talent and heart to bounce back, even after the disappointing loss.

The comeback felt even sweeter because this team had been hungry for redemption. Exactly 375 days earlier, they lost the district championship and hung that runner-up banner in their batting barn. They looked at it all year, fueling their determination to never feel that way again.

Gray Brown pitched brilliantly in the comeback game, allowing just three hits while striking out eight batters. Potkanowicz and Juliana Walters delivered crucial doubles that pushed the lead out of reach. Every player contributed to the win.
