Oklahoma City Students Earn Top Academic Honors Statewide

Seventy-nine Oklahoma City students just proved that excellence happens every day in public schools.

On May 4, Oklahoma City Public Schools hosted a special ceremony honoring students who earned state and national academic recognition. The celebration brought together scholars, teachers, families, and district leaders to recognize achievements that often take years of dedication to earn.

Two seniors stood out among the honorees. Megna Ponnavolvu and Amasha Samaraweera earned Oklahoma Academic All-State recognition, the highest honor the state gives to public high school seniors. The award celebrates not just perfect grades but excellence in leadership and community service.

Forty seniors received Oklahoma Academic Scholar distinctions for exceptional classroom performance and college readiness. Each walked away with graduation cords marking their achievement, a visible reminder of the countless hours they invested in their education.

The ceremony also celebrated linguistic achievement. Thirty-seven students, including one sophomore, earned the Oklahoma Seal of Biliteracy by demonstrating proficiency in English plus at least one additional language. These scholars proved that Oklahoma City students are preparing for an interconnected world where communication across cultures matters more than ever.

Classen SAS High School at Northeast earned AP Honor Roll recognition for expanding access to challenging coursework. The school didn't just offer Advanced Placement classes. They supported students through those rigorous programs and helped them succeed.

Behind every student honored that evening stands a team. Teachers stayed late to offer extra help. Counselors guided students through college applications and scholarship forms. Support staff created environments where learning could happen. School leaders championed high standards while providing resources to meet them.
