** Smiling woman looking hopefully toward the future after surviving childhood abuse and seeing justice served

Oklahoma Woman Overcomes Years of Abuse, Calls Herself 'Overcomer

😊 Feel Good

After enduring years of childhood abuse, Lillian Settle testified against her stepfather and saw him convicted on multiple counts of rape and child sex crimes. Today she's planning her wedding, teaching preschool, and showing others that healing is possible.

Lillian Settle refuses to let her past define her future, and her courage just helped put a predator behind bars for life.

The Oklahoma woman testified last month against her former stepfather, Jonathan Hill, who was convicted on multiple counts of first-degree rape and lewd acts with a child. The abuse began when Lillian was just five years old and continued for a decade, hidden behind threats of violence.

"There were times that he would hold a knife to my throat, hold a gun to my head and threaten me," Settle recalled from her new home outside Oklahoma. "I've been told all the time, 'If you tell your mom, I'll kill you and I'll kill her.'"

Her turning point came at age 15 when she attempted suicide. A nurse reported the abuse, but it took years before Settle felt ready to speak openly about what happened.

"It was a couple of years before I was able to open up and say, 'Hey, these things happened to me, and I don't want to bear the weight of it alone anymore,'" she said.

Last year, Hill was arrested. In the courtroom, Settle found her power.

"I refuse to call myself a victim because the more I play into being a victim and having a victim mentality, the more that gives him power," she explained. "Being up on that stand in the courtroom, I had the power."

The Ripple Effect

District Attorney Adam R. Panter hopes this conviction sends a powerful message to other survivors. "It is my hope that this result instills strength and confidence in others who have suffered abuse in silence to raise their voices and demand to be heard," he said in a statement.

Settle's story is already making waves. Her sisters describe her as "sunshine in a person," and that light never fully dimmed despite years of darkness.

Today, Settle works as a preschool teacher, attends church regularly, and is planning her wedding. She credits her faith in God for helping her heal and move forward.

"I'm working a great job, and I'm getting involved in church here and just wedding planning, and it's really amazing," she said, all smiles. She's reconnected with her mother and built a new life focused on joy rather than trauma.

Her message to other survivors is simple but profound: speak up. "If my story would encourage even just one woman to speak up, say something, then that is 100% what I would want to do," Settle said.

Hill faces life in prison and will be formally sentenced on August 17.
