Olympic Gold Medalist Hannah Scott Honored by Hometown
Hannah Scott, one of only two women from Northern Ireland to win Olympic gold, received her hometown's highest honor Saturday. The 26-year-old rowing champion gave back by donating her £20,000 prize to her local club.
When Hannah Scott walked through a guard of honor formed by her rowing club teammates Saturday, she became the latest recipient of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough's highest civic honor.
The 26-year-old from Coleraine earned the distinction after winning Olympic gold in the Women's Quadruple Sculls at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. She's only the second woman from Northern Ireland to claim Olympic gold, following Lady Mary Peters' 1972 victory.
"It's really special to receive this from the people who have raised me and come with me on this journey," Scott told BBC News NI after the ceremony at Coleraine Town Hall. The council unanimously agreed to bestow the freedom of the borough in January, describing her as an inspiration to young women across the region.
Lady Mary Peters herself attended Saturday's celebration, more than 50 years after her own gold medal triumph in Munich. "Young girls will realize they can do what Hannah has achieved if they work and train hard," Peters said.

The Ripple Effect
Scott's impact extends far beyond her medal. She donated her entire £20,000 award from the Olympic Medallist Fund to Bann Rowing Club, where she's been a member throughout her career. The club used the money to purchase two single scull boats and a safety boat, equipment that will help train the next generation of rowers.
Susan MacLaughlin, president of Bann Rowing Club, said it's wonderful to see Hannah acknowledged locally for her achievements. "I always knew she was going places," she added.
Local MLA Claire Sugden called Scott "one of our most successful daughters" and praised her role as an inspiration to young women throughout the area. Mayor Oliver McMullan echoed the sentiment, noting that Hannah encourages young people to pursue their chosen sports with dedication.
The ceremony brought together community members who have supported Scott's journey from local rower to Olympic champion, proving that hometown heroes never forget where they came from.
