Pennsylvania Cheerleader Wins National Title After Ice Storm
After being trapped in a hotel for three days during an ice storm, Pennsbury High School's cheer team had one shot at nationals. They nailed it and brought home their first national championship.
When Ellie Leimer's flight touched down in Dallas last month, she didn't expect to spend the next three days trapped in a hotel watching an ice storm shut down the city. The Pennsbury High School senior and her teammates had traveled to compete for a national cheerleading title, but Mother Nature had other plans.
The team couldn't practice for three days as the storm raged outside. Worse, organizers announced the competition format would change: instead of two performances, each team would get just one chance to prove themselves.
"Knowing we only had one chance definitely made us more nervous," said Leimer. "Especially being a senior, and knowing this was my last chance ever to do this."
When Pennsbury finally took the floor, all the worry melted away. The Falcons delivered a flawless routine and won first place in the Advanced Varsity Crowd Leading Small division, claiming their first national championship.
For Leimer, the win fulfilled a dream that started when she was seven years old. She'd been chasing one thing since her first practice: the special jacket that national champions receive.
"From the first time I saw it, I knew I wanted that jacket," she said. The team had come close before, finishing third her freshman year and sixth last year, but this time felt different.

The sixth-place finish lit a fire under the entire squad. Leimer, who serves as a base performing stunts and tumbling passes, began practicing and working out seven days a week while also motivating her teammates as captain.
The Ripple Effect
The championship brought recognition that cheerleaders rarely receive. When the team returned home, police and fire departments escorted them back to school.
At the next boys basketball game, Pennsbury unveiled the championship banner while the cheerleaders wore their new jackets to thunderous applause. "It's nice to see all the support, especially from the teams that we are usually supporting," said Leimer.
The Falcons also won the Go Be Great Award in Dallas, which honors cheerleading teams making a difference beyond competition. The squad regularly performs at fundraisers, cheers runners at community races, and organizes clothing drives.
"I love giving back and seeing the smiles on people's faces," said Leimer. "The award is really just as meaningful as the championship."
Next year, Leimer will study sports marketing in college while continuing to cheer competitively. She already works on Pennsbury's athletics social media team and hopes to judge competitions and coach in the future.
For now, she's enjoying wearing that jacket she dreamed about for over a decade.
