Customer examining electric bicycles at Perth bike shop during recent sales surge

Perth E-Bike Sales Jump 750% as Fuel Prices Soar

Aussie commuters are ditching their cars for e-bikes as fuel prices surge, with one Perth shop selling 30 e-bikes in 10 days instead of their usual four per week. The shift could save riders thousands while building healthier, greener communities.

When Sam Hoskisson watched his weekly fuel bill triple from $60 to $165, he knew something had to change. The Perth commuter finally made the leap he'd been considering for over a year and bought an e-bike.

He's not alone. Perth bike shops are reporting a surge in sales as fuel prices climb amid Middle East supply disruptions.

Dennis Lightfoot, who has owned Glen Parker Cycles since 1991, says his store went from selling three or four e-bikes weekly to nearly 30 in just 10 days. Most buyers mention fuel costs as their main motivation.

"We're getting a lot of people that never even thought about getting an electric bike," Lightfoot said. If fuel challenges continue, he predicts the industry could see a boom similar to the pandemic bike rush.

Greg Stoyles from Fremantle's Mercer Cycles is seeing the same trend. Beyond new e-bike sales, customers are dusting off old bicycles and asking for repairs so they can reduce car use.

The numbers make sense. Entry-level e-bikes cost between $2,000 and $3,000, but car owners spend about $2,000 yearly just on insurance and registration before adding fuel costs.

For regional Australians, the benefits go beyond savings. Katerina Widerington-Oliver lives 270 kilometers south of Perth in Katanning and says her e-bike has reduced her anxiety about living remotely.

"I know that if I need to get to the shops or ride 25 kilometers out of town to check on the livestock, then I know it's manageable," she said.

The Ripple Effect

This shift represents more than individual savings. As more Australians choose bikes over cars, communities stand to gain cleaner air, less traffic congestion, and healthier residents.

Peter Bourke from Bicycle Industries Australia says governments now need to invest in safe, connected bike infrastructure to support this transition. Transport for NSW already recognizes that walking and cycling remain "the most affordable ways to get around."

The movement is turning a fuel crisis into an opportunity for lasting positive change in how Australians travel.
