Philippine and ASEAN energy officials launching clean energy business forum in Metro Manila

Philippines Hosts Clean Energy Forum to Close $120B Gap

😊 Feel Good

Southeast Asia needs $150 billion annually for clean energy by 2030 but raised only $30 million in 2021. The Philippines is bringing together 1,500 leaders this October to turn that around.

Southeast Asia has enormous clean energy potential, but there's a problem: the region is missing almost all the money it needs to unlock it.

This October, the Philippines is hosting the 26th ASEAN Energy Business Forum to change that. The five-day gathering in Metro Manila will bring together energy ministers from 11 Southeast Asian nations, industry leaders, investors, and more than 1,500 delegates to forge partnerships and mobilize the investments the region desperately needs.

The numbers tell the story. ASEAN countries need about $200 billion in annual energy investment by 2030 to meet growing demand and transition to cleaner sources. Roughly $150 billion of that must go toward clean energy. In 2021, the region mobilized just $30 million for clean energy projects.

"That gap is precisely what AEBF-26 exists to help close," said Dato' Ir. Ts. Razib Dawood, Executive Director of the ASEAN Centre for Energy.

Philippine Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin said the forum offers a chance to move beyond talk. "ASEAN's energy future will depend on how effectively we turn our shared ambitions into concrete investments, stronger regional connections, and projects that deliver reliable, affordable, and cleaner energy to our people," she explained.

The forum's theme, "Clean Energy Unlocked: A Stronger ASEAN," reflects the region's commitment to accelerating development while deepening cooperation. It runs parallel to the 44th ASEAN Energy Ministers Meeting and the Philippines' role as ASEAN Chair.

Attendees will tackle major regional priorities including the ASEAN Power Grid, renewable energy certificates, energy efficiency, and sustainable aviation fuel. The forum will also launch the 9th ASEAN Energy Outlook and the ASEAN Energy Investment Report, providing roadmaps for future development.

The Ripple Effect

When Southeast Asia closes its clean energy investment gap, 680 million people gain access to more reliable, affordable, and sustainable power. Regional cooperation on energy also strengthens economic integration across the 11 member states, creating jobs and opportunities while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

The forum builds on momentum from last year's gathering in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This time, organizers are emphasizing concrete partnerships over discussions, matching investors with projects that can break ground quickly.

The Department of Energy and ASEAN Centre for Energy are inviting stakeholders from government, industry, financial institutions, and development organizations to participate. Registration opens at the forum's website for anyone ready to help bridge the gap between Southeast Asia's energy ambitions and reality.
