Pick n Pay Cashier Gets Surprise Proposal at Work

When Ruben Smith dropped to one knee in front of the cashier desks at Pick n Pay, his girlfriend Yolanda Booysen had no idea it was coming.

The 42-year-old proposed to his coworker right where their love story began, surrounded by cheering colleagues and stunned shoppers at Promenade Mall in Mitchell's Plain, South Africa. Their emotional moment has since gone viral on TikTok, reminding people everywhere that romance can bloom in the most unexpected places.

Smith started working at the grocery store less than a year ago. From his first week, one face stood out among the daily rush of customers and coworkers.

"I noticed her and grew fond of her by seeing her each and every day," Smith says. What began as a workplace friendship quickly deepened into something more meaningful.

Both residents of Westridge, the two connected over their shared love for life and laughter. Smith was captivated by what he calls Booysen's "beautiful soul" and the way she puts everyone above herself.

When asked what truly won his heart, Smith points to her whole personality. "Her smile, her beautiful eyes, her laughter and her way she just handles people in general," he explains, adding that her green and blue eyes make his knees weak.

The proposal itself was pure emotion. Video footage shows Booysen visibly shaking, completely caught off guard by the surprise. "She was shocked, nervous, overwhelmed," Smith recalls.
