Poland Builds $35M Green Rail Hub to Cut Truck Emissions

Poland is building a major rail terminal that will move cargo off congested highways and onto cleaner electric trains, marking a big win for both trade efficiency and the environment.

The Polish Development Fund and Poland's National Recovery Plan are investing $35 million to construct the CLIP Group intermodal terminal in Zabrze, a city in the industrial Silesian region of southern Poland. The facility will handle 312,000 shipping containers annually once completed.

The terminal will feature four 750-meter transshipment tracks and two electrified cranes that can seamlessly transfer cargo between trucks and trains. An advanced management system will coordinate the complex logistics, ensuring containers move smoothly through the facility.

Location matters here. Zabrze sits in Poland's industrial heartland, where factories and warehouses generate massive freight volumes. The new terminal will create direct rail connections between these manufacturing centers and the Baltic Sea ports of Gdańsk and Gdynia, two of Europe's busiest shipping hubs.

Moving containers by electric rail instead of diesel trucks delivers significant environmental benefits. Freight trains produce up to 75% less carbon emissions per ton of cargo compared to long-haul trucking, while also reducing highway congestion and road wear.
