Pony Rescued from Tractor Tire in Stoke-on-Trent

When residents in Stoke-on-Trent spotted a pony stuck entirely inside a tractor tire, they knew every minute counted.

The wild pony had somehow become completely trapped in the derelict tire in a local field. No one could figure out how it happened, but the mystery took a backseat to getting the frightened animal free.

Locals immediately called the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Officer Nicola Riley arrived to find an understandably scared and uncomfortable animal wedged inside the massive tire.

The rescue team faced a delicate decision. Using cutting tools risked injuring the pony, so they chose the gentler route.

Riley and her team carefully eased the pony's head and shoulders out of the tire. The animal wobbled to its feet and walked back to join the other ponies grazing nearby.

"Thankfully, everyone worked really well together and we managed to get him out without causing any injury," Riley told the BBC. She stayed for an hour afterward to monitor the pony for any signs of lasting trauma.

The pony's matted, dirty fur suggested he'd been trapped for quite some time. But within minutes of his freedom, he began feeding normally alongside his herd.
