Portland Breaks E-Bike Record with 1,060 Riders

Portland just claimed a Guinness World Record with 1,060 riders cruising together on electric bikes through the city's waterfront. The Sunday morning event organized by the Portland Bureau of Transportation shattered Seattle's previous record of 405 e-bikes by more than double.

Susana Reyes, an official Guinness World Records adjudicator, was on site at South Waterfront to certify the achievement. The crowd gathered at Salmon Street Springs Fountain before completing a scenic two-mile loop across the Hawthorne and Tilikum bridges.

The record-breaking ride doubled as a 10-year birthday party for BIKETOWN, Portland's bike-share service sponsored by Nike. The sneaker company sweetened the celebration by giving the first 1,000 participants free tickets to Portland's Pride Festival happening the same day at Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

The event showcased how electric bikes are becoming a mainstream transportation choice in American cities. BIKETOWN made its entire fleet free throughout Portland on Sunday using the code "10YRBKTN," encouraging even more residents to try pedal-assisted transportation.
