Portland Airport Debuts Overhead EV Charging System

Charging electric rental cars just got a whole lot smarter at Portland International Airport, where a new overhead system is solving one of the biggest headaches in EV infrastructure.

ChargePoint installed 10 dual-port fast chargers mounted above parking spaces in the airport's Quick Turnaround Facility, where rental car companies prep vehicles between customers. The retractable cables drop down to charge up to 20 electric cars simultaneously, then pull back up out of the way.

The genius is in what the design eliminates. By lifting charging equipment overhead, the airport reclaimed valuable ground-level space while protecting expensive hardware from accidental vehicle damage. "The innovative overhead charging system enabled us to save on installation costs by limiting the conduit and wiring needed and helps protect against potential damage caused by vehicles," said Jeremiah Hartley, Airport Rental Car Manager at Portland International Airport.

The installation tackles a real problem facing airports nationwide as rental companies add more electric vehicles to their fleets. Traditional charging stations take up floor space, require extensive underground wiring, and get bumped by cars maneuvering in tight quarters.

Portland's solution is already proving its worth. The fast chargers can power up rental cars quickly between customers, keeping electric vehicles in rotation instead of sitting idle while charging. For travelers, that means more EV rental options when they land.
