Solar EV Charges Itself 40+ Miles Daily in New Tests

Imagine never plugging in your car for your daily commute because the sun does it for you. That future just became measurably real in Southern California.

Aptera Motors' solar electric vehicle exceeded a major milestone in July when independent testing firm TÜV Rheinland measured it generating more than 4 kilowatt-hours of battery power daily from sunlight alone. That translates to roughly 40 miles of driving range added every sunny day without touching a charging cable.

The testing took place over three days at Aptera's California facility, with solar expert Dr. Giorgio Bardizza measuring energy from sunrise to sunset using calibrated instruments. TÜV Rheinland, a 154-year-old German testing organization trusted worldwide, measured the energy where it actually entered the battery, not just at the solar panels.

The results surprised even the optimists. On the simplest test day, the vehicle sat parked and untouched with its hatch closed, generating 4.23 kWh or about 42 miles of range. When repositioned once at solar noon, like an owner might do after lunch, it generated 44 miles worth of power. The best performance came when the rear hatch was angled toward the sun throughout the day, delivering 47 miles of range on what was actually the cloudiest of the three test days.

For context, the average American drives 29 miles per day. That means drivers in sunny climates could potentially cover their entire daily driving without ever plugging in or visiting a gas station.

Aptera designed the entire solar system in-house, from the curved solar panels to the custom charge controller and power distribution. The company published the complete test report online so anyone can review the methodology and data.

This verification marks more than an engineering achievement. It demonstrates that solar mobility can work as everyday transportation, not just as a concept. For the millions of Americans living in sunny regions, it opens the possibility of transportation that costs nothing to fuel and produces zero emissions during daily use.
