When a student union president needed help during one of Nigeria's darkest campus crises, Professor Biodun Jeyifo showed up after midnight with a solution that would change everything.

The renowned Harvard professor, who passed away in January at 80, built a legacy that stretched from the University of Ife to Cornell and beyond. BJ, as students affectionately called him, never backed down from a fight for what was right. In the 1970s, when Nigeria's federal government banned student protest leaders from all universities, he led the charge to defy the order. As president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, he worked behind the scenes to admit Segun Okeowo, the rusticated national student union president, before government officials could stop them.

Years later, tragedy struck when four students died during protests following the ritual killing of a fellow student. Campus leadership collapsed, examinations hung in the balance, and the university teetered on the edge of chaos.

That's when BJ stepped in. Meeting well past midnight with student leader Wole Olaoye, he facilitated an unprecedented deal. Olaoye would delay his own graduation to restore order, and in return, the university would honor the fallen students with full ceremonial burial and allow him to complete national service before finishing his degree.
