Child receiving needle-free nasal spray flu vaccine from healthcare provider in Queensland clinic

Queensland Kids Get Needle-Free Flu Vaccine

😊 Feel Good

Queensland has expanded its free nasal spray flu vaccine program to cover all children ages 6 to 17, making it easier for families to protect their kids without needles. The move comes as officials rush to use expiring vaccine stocks before winter arrives.

Getting a flu shot just got a whole lot easier for thousands of Queensland families who can now protect their kids without a single needle.

The state government expanded its free FluMist nasal spray program this week to include all children between 6 and 17 years old. Previously, only kids aged 2 to 5 could access the needle-free option for free.

The program is already showing impressive results. Since March, more than 29,000 young children received flu vaccines, and two-thirds of them chose the nasal spray over traditional shots. That represents a 30% jump in flu vaccination rates for the 2-to-5 age group.

Health Minister Tim Nicholls says the expansion serves a practical purpose too. Most FluMist stocks will expire in August, and officials want to get those vaccines into arms (or noses) before they go to waste.

"It's no good that stock expiring on us," Nicholls said. "We want people to get out there and get their free flu vaccination before winter really hits."

Timing matters right now. Queensland is seeing relatively low flu numbers compared to recent years, with 936 hospitalizations so far in 2026. That's less than half the 2,067 cases recorded at this same point last year.

But Chief Health Officer Dr. Marianne Gale warns this quiet period won't last. She's urging families to book appointments now while flu activity remains low and vaccine supplies are still available.

The Ripple Effect

The program expansion creates benefits that reach beyond individual families. Pharmacists report that the needle-free option makes group appointments much simpler for families with children of different ages.

Chris Owens from the Pharmacy Guild of Australia notes the program particularly helps "needle-phobic" children who might otherwise skip vaccination entirely. "There's no needle, no tears, no fears. Just protection," he said.

Higher vaccination rates among kids could mean fewer flu cases spreading through schools and into the broader community. Nearly 1.2 million Queenslanders have received flu vaccines this year, maintaining the same pace as last year despite some early delivery delays.

The needle-free approach removes a major barrier that keeps many children from getting vaccinated, potentially creating a healthier winter for everyone in Queensland.

Families interested in the free nasal spray vaccine can contact their local immunization provider or pharmacy to book an appointment before stocks run out in early August.
