Rare Night-Shining Clouds Return for Summer Season

Photographer John Clement was capturing a planetary conjunction on June 2 when he noticed something extraordinary glowing above Kennewick, Washington. Delicate, silvery clouds were shining brilliantly in the twilight sky, announcing the return of one of nature's rarest spectacles.

Clement confirmed his sighting at 9:58 PM, making it one of the earliest noctilucent cloud observations of the season. Within days, astronomy enthusiasts across northern latitudes were posting their own sightings, including stunning views from Flensburg, Germany.

These ethereal clouds form 50 miles above Earth's surface in the mesosphere, roughly 10 times higher than typical storm clouds. That extreme altitude allows them to catch and reflect sunlight long after sunset, creating an otherworldly glow when all other clouds have faded to dark silhouettes.

The clouds are made of tiny ice crystals that gather near the edge of space, where temperatures plunge far below freezing even in summer. Their brilliant blue and silver shimmer has captivated observers since they were first documented in the 1880s.

The Bright Side

While noctilucent clouds remain mysterious in many ways, scientists know they appear most reliably between mid-May and mid-August. Peak viewing typically occurs in July across the Northern Hemisphere, giving everyone from casual stargazers to serious photographers weeks of potential sightings.

The clouds are most visible at latitudes between 45 and 80 degrees north of the equator, covering much of North America, Europe, and Asia. You don't need special equipment or a dark sky location to see them, just a clear view toward the western horizon after sunset.

Look for delicate, wispy formations that glow silver and blue against the deepening twilight while other clouds near the horizon appear dark. The best viewing window begins as the brightest stars emerge, when the sun sits just below the horizon from your perspective.

Amateur photographers using standard cameras and lenses have captured spectacular images, proving these cosmic clouds are accessible to anyone willing to spend a summer evening watching the sky.
