Rare Purple Aurora Lights Up Brazil During Solar Storm

Astrophotographer Egon Filter had dreamed of capturing the southern lights over Brazil for years, knowing the odds were against him. On January 19, those odds finally came through when a rare aurora glowed briefly over his home state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Filter was watching the southern sky from Cambará do Sul when the faint purple-red shimmer appeared. He quickly snapped photos before the glow vanished just minutes later.

The sighting was exceptional because auroras typically stick close to Earth's polar regions. Rio Grande do Sul sits between 27 and 33 degrees south latitude, far outside where these light shows normally occur.

"For an aurora to be visible at low latitudes, a very violent and exceptional solar storm is necessary," Filter explained. January 19 delivered exactly that, with a strong geomagnetic storm hitting Earth at just the right moment.

What made the display even more unusual was its location within the South Atlantic Anomaly, a region where Earth's magnetic field runs weaker than elsewhere. Scientists usually expect less auroral activity in this zone, not more.

Solar physicist Tamitha Skov confirmed the sighting was likely a diffuse equatorial aurora pushing through the anomaly. "What makes this particular observation more remarkable is that it is observed high in the sky over Brazil and not near the southern horizon," she noted.

The timing of Filter's catch speaks to the power of showing up. He'd been monitoring space weather conditions and watching the sky, ready for his moment even when it seemed unlikely to come.

His patience paid off with a phenomenon many Brazilians have never witnessed from their own soil. The image now stands as proof that sometimes the rarest dreams do materialize, even if only for a few fleeting minutes.

Skov emphasized that sightings like this aren't completely unexpected right now. The sun is returning to its more active phase, creating conditions that make these low-latitude auroras possible during strong storms.

Scientists have been predicting displays like this for years as solar activity ramps up. Some researchers even asked aurora watchers in unusual locations to stay alert for exactly this kind of event.
