Record 85 Women Run for Governor in 2026 Elections

American politics just hit a new milestone that's been decades in the making. A record 85 women are running for governor across the country in 2026, shattering the previous high of 69 set just four years ago.

The numbers tell a story of steady progress. Democrats have fielded 51 women candidates for governor (also a record), while Republicans have 34 running.

The Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University tracks these numbers, and their latest data from July shows women's representation gaining ground across the board. In the House of Representatives, 580 women are running, just three shy of the all-time record.

This year's races could create several historic firsts. Deb Haaland, who served as U.S. Secretary of the Interior, is running to become the first Native American woman governor in any state if she wins in New Mexico.

Current Senators Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota are both running to become the first women governors of their respective states. Their moves from Senate to state executive offices reflect an important trend.

In Congress, candidates like Melat Kiros could become the first Black woman to represent Colorado, while Aisha Wahab might be California's first Middle Eastern or North African congresswoman. Denise Powell is running to become Nebraska's first Democratic woman in Congress.

The Ripple Effect: These candidacies matter beyond the individual races. Women now make up 27% of all House candidates and nearly 24% of Senate candidates, numbers that were unthinkable a generation ago. Each woman who runs creates a pathway for others, showing girls and young women that these positions are within reach.

The 2026 races also matter for future presidential politics. Experts point out that serving as governor has historically been a common stepping stone to running for president, making these gubernatorial campaigns particularly significant.

Progress still has room to grow, with women making up just 25% of all gubernatorial candidates despite representing half the population. But the trajectory points upward, with more women running now than in 2024 after a brief dip in the previous cycle.
