Rescue Dog Musical Raises Funds for Oregon Humane Society

A new musical comedy about adopting a troubled rescue dog premieres in Portland with proceeds benefiting shelter animals. Created by Quarterflash's Marv Ross, the show turns his chaotic real-life rescue experience into Broadway-style entertainment.

When Marv Ross and his wife adopted a rescue dog during the pandemic, they had no idea their struggle would become Portland's most heartwarming new musical.

"Marvin's Rescue" opens March 13 at The Armory, blending humor and hope while raising money for the Oregon Humane Society. The show features actors literally playing dogs, complete with what choreographer Voni Kengla calls "choredography."

Ross, best known for the 1980s hit "Harden My Heart" with his band Quarterflash, turned his family's rescue journey into comedy gold. Their dog Izzy had never been on a leash and once caused a woman in her 80s to fall while lunging at another dog.

"I almost took her back," Ross admits. "But when I accepted her, I became better at dealing with her issues."

That turning point inspired a musical exploring trauma, relationships, and second chances for both humans and dogs. The story follows Marvin, who adopts troubled dog Sam hoping for love and healing, only to discover they both need saving.

Actor Victor Polanco prepared for his role as Sam by studying his family's rottweiler. "I watched our dog Mila and took notes on her body wiggles and personality," he says. "I came up with this mutt of a character."

Why This Inspires

Three shelter dogs serve as narrators, singing lines like "Dogs with toxic issues, hope you brought a box of tissues." The show doesn't shy away from the messy reality of rescue while celebrating the transformation that happens when we choose love.

Special "For the Love of Dogs" performances on March 14, 19, and 21 will feature puppy cuddles in the lobby. Audience members can submit photos of their own dogs to display before the show.

A veterinary social worker from Oregon Humane Society will join Ross for a post-show conversation on March 21. The partnership between Portland Playhouse, triangle productions!, and Portland Center Stage ensures every ticket helps shelter animals find homes.

"We fell in love with Izzy at the shelter," Ross says. "It was a wonderful feeling I had never experienced anything as powerful."

The musical proves that sometimes the ones who need rescuing end up doing the saving.
