Rivian Starts Building $45K Electric SUV in Illinois

Rivian Automotive just hit a milestone that could change who gets to drive electric: the company started building its new R2 SUV at its Illinois plant this week, with the first customer deliveries scheduled for late spring.

The R2 represents something the EV market desperately needs. While Rivian's current vehicles start above $70,000, this midsize electric SUV will eventually offer an entry-level version starting at $45,000, putting it within reach of more American families.

The first models rolling out this spring are performance versions priced at $58,000. They pack impressive specs: 330 miles of range, dual motors, and lifetime access to Rivian's advanced driving assistance system called Autonomy+.

Company founder and CEO RJ Scaringe personally drove the first customer-ready R2 off the line at the Normal, Illinois plant on April 22. The moment represents years of work to design a vehicle that looks like Rivian's popular R1 SUV but costs significantly less to build.

The timing matters for Rivian's future. The company has been working toward profitability, and the R2 is central to that plan. By attracting more buyers with lower prices while cutting production costs, Rivian hopes to prove that American EV makers can compete without relying solely on luxury price tags.

The journey to this moment hasn't been smooth. Just days before the production announcement, a tornado damaged part of the plant used for R2 parts storage and logistics. The team pushed through to hit their production target anyway.

The R2's arrival signals something bigger than one company's success. As more automakers introduce electric vehicles below $50,000, the technology becomes accessible to middle-class families who want to reduce their carbon footprint but can't afford premium prices.

Rivian's Illinois plant employs thousands of workers in Normal, a community that's become a hub for American EV manufacturing. Every production milestone means more stable jobs and a stronger local economy.

The more affordable entry-level R2 won't arrive until late 2027, giving Rivian time to ramp up production of the higher-margin performance models first. It's a careful balance between meeting demand and maintaining financial health.
