Four-legged yellow ANYmal X robot walking through industrial facility with pipes and equipment

Mind Blown

A four-legged robot just became the first ever certified to walk through oil refineries and chemical plants where a single spark could trigger an explosion. This breakthrough keeps workers out of danger zones that cause thousands of injuries every year.

For the first time ever, a walking robot can safely patrol the most dangerous industrial sites on Earth without risking a catastrophic explosion.

Swiss company ANYbotics just launched ANYmal X, a four-legged inspection robot certified to operate in oil refineries, gas facilities, and chemical plants where flammable gases make every electrical device a potential ignition source. Until now, human workers wearing protective gear were the only option for checking critical equipment in these zones.

The robot solves a massive problem. Equipment failures in hazardous areas cost the world's 500 largest companies roughly $1.4 trillion each year in preventable downtime. In oil and gas facilities alone, a single hour of unplanned shutdown can cost up to $500,000.

But the human cost matters more. U.S. extraction workers face a fatality rate seven times the national average, according to federal safety data.

Creating a robot that can't create sparks took four years and more than 10 patents. "Many experts thought a legged robot could never be made safe for explosive atmospheres," said Péter Fankhauser, CEO of ANYbotics.

The engineering challenge was extreme. Walking robots need powerful motors, large batteries, and exposed cameras to navigate stairs and complex spaces. All of those components had to be made explosion-proof without making the robot too heavy or slow to be useful.

The team designed every part from scratch with safety in mind. The robot's AI computer sits in nitrogen-filled sealed chambers. Its 12 leg motors wear flameproof casings. Non-metallic shells insulate metal parts, while conductive feet provide grounding and automatic cutoffs monitor temperature constantly.

The Ripple Effect

More than 50 companies already use earlier versions of ANYmal robots to run over 120,000 autonomous inspections every month in power plants and materials facilities. Now those same benefits extend to the world's most hazardous industrial zones.

The robots don't just keep workers safer. They provide continuous, repeatable data that helps companies catch small problems before they become expensive disasters. Each inspection automatically logs findings and can trigger maintenance work orders, making facilities more efficient while protecting both workers and communities near industrial sites.

ANYmal X meets both European ATEX and global IECEx safety standards, the strictest certifications for hazardous environments. The robots operate autonomously, climbing stairs and navigating obstacles while monitoring pumps, compressors, valves, and piping that previously required human inspectors to enter danger zones.

Technology is finally making the world's most dangerous jobs safer for the people who do them.
