Roger Federer Cries During Tennis Hall of Fame Speech

Roger Federer couldn't hold back tears as he told a packed crowd in Newport, Rhode Island that tennis "meant the world" to him during his Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

The Swiss tennis legend, who won 20 Grand Slam titles before retiring in 2022, was introduced by his wife Mirka. He immediately joked about her "high level" presentation before getting emotional.

"This is one of the greatest honours of my life," Federer told the audience. "They call this the Hall of Fame, but fame was never the goal."

Instead, Federer said his real achievement was spending his life doing something he loved with people who loved it just as much. He won a men's record eight Wimbledon titles, six Australian Opens, five US Opens, and one French Open during his 24-year professional career.

The 45-year-old broke down multiple times during his speech. He cried while talking about his childhood hero Stefan Edberg, calling them "happy tears." He teared up again thanking his longtime coach Severin Luthi.

The hardest moment came when he tried to thank Mirka. "Now the Mirka part," he said, pausing before crying. "Oh gosh, this is such a mess."

He tried joking his way through it. "I need tissues and sunglasses, everything to protect me right now," he told the crowd as more tears came.

Why This Inspires

Federer's emotion shows what true passion looks like. He didn't just play tennis for titles or trophies. He built a life around something he genuinely loved, and that love brought him incredible friendships, experiences, and a family he adores.

His advice to current players was simple: stay authentic, take risks, and keep pushing the sport to new levels. "We all leave the court eventually, but the sport keeps evolving," he said.

Federer spent 310 weeks as world number one and won 103 ATP Tour titles. He wore more than 5,000 headbands during his career and almost always played in two pairs of socks.

Broadcaster Mary Carillo was also inducted alongside Federer, introduced by tennis great Billie Jean King.

Federer made one thing clear in his closing remarks. "I'm still writing my love letter to tennis, and my time as a player is done, but tennis will always stand at the intersection of everything I care most about," he said. "So this is not a goodbye."
