Royal Navy Tests Robot Sailboats Powered by Wind and Sun

The world's navies are embracing an old idea with a futuristic twist: wind-powered vessels that sail themselves across the ocean.

The UK's Royal Navy is testing a fleet of small robotic sailboats called C-Stars, built by Plymouth-based company Oshen. Each vessel measures just 4 feet long and weighs about 88 pounds, making them light enough to deploy quickly but sturdy enough to handle ocean conditions.

Here's what makes them special: wind fills their sails for propulsion, while solar panels power all the tech onboard. That means zero fuel costs and zero emissions while they patrol the seas.

The tiny boats work together as a constellation, creating a wide-area sensor network across the ocean. Think of them as floating watchdogs that can monitor shipping lanes, track environmental changes, or provide communications relays without anyone needing to refuel or resupply them.

"The simplest way of describing C-Stars is as self-deploying, station-keeping ocean buoys," explains Oshen CEO Anahita Laverack. Unlike traditional buoys that stay anchored in one spot, these robots can sail to wherever they're needed and hold position there.

The Bright Side

This innovation solves two problems at once. Navies get better ocean surveillance coverage without the massive fuel bills that come with deploying traditional ships and aircraft. The planet benefits too, since these robots operate entirely on renewable energy.

The technology could spread far beyond military use. Scientists studying ocean currents, marine life, or climate patterns could deploy fleets of these affordable sensors across areas too vast and expensive to monitor with research vessels.

The Royal Navy's willingness to return to sail power, even in robotic form, shows how old solutions can tackle modern challenges when paired with new technology.
