Ruby-Red Citrus Innovation Lands in South African Stores
A striking new citrus fruit with a deep ruby interior is making its South African debut, bringing award-winning flavor and nutrition to shoppers. The Onix orange won international taste and innovation awards before arriving at Checkers supermarkets this season.
Shoppers in Gauteng and Western Cape can now discover a citrus fruit that looks like nothing else in the produce aisle.
Onix, a distinctive orange with ruby-red flesh and unique striped skin, launched this month at select Checkers supermarkets across South Africa. The fruit earned the 2025 Fruit Logistica Innovation Award and the International Taste Institute's Superior Taste Award before making its way from international markets to South African shelves.
The orange delivers more than visual appeal. Its deep color comes from naturally high levels of anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants typically found in berries and red grapes. The flavor balances sweetness with a bright acidity that works for fresh eating, juicing, baking, and everyday cooking.
AMFresh brought the fruit to South Africa through its Genesis Fresh innovation platform in partnership with Shoprite Group. The companies are selling Onix loose during this pilot phase, making it easy for curious shoppers to buy just one or two to try at home.
"Introducing Onix into the South African market is an important step in building long-term category value through innovation," said André Russouw, Country Manager at Genesis Fresh South Africa. The launch also opens possibilities for future local production as growers explore adapting the variety to South African growing conditions.

The Ripple Effect
This launch connects global agricultural innovation with local opportunity in meaningful ways. South Africa ranks among the world's top citrus producers, and introducing premium varieties like Onix gives local growers new options for adding value to their operations.
The partnership between Spanish and South African teams also demonstrates how seasonal differences between hemispheres can extend availability of specialty produce. When citrus season ends in Europe, South African growers can continue supplying international markets with the same innovative varieties.
Quintin Paladin, General Manager of Freshmark, highlighted how the introduction brings "innovation and excitement to our customers" while elevating the fresh produce category with standout quality and taste.
The pilot arrives as South Africa enters peak citrus season, giving the fruit maximum visibility when shoppers are already reaching for oranges and other citrus. If the trial succeeds, it could pave the way for expanded distribution and even local growing operations that create jobs and economic opportunity.
Innovation in agriculture keeps getting tastier, one ruby-red orange at a time.
