San Diego's Free Solar Program Cuts Business Energy Costs

Businesses across north San Diego County just got a game-changing opportunity to cut their energy costs without spending a dime upfront.

Clean Energy Alliance partnered with San Diego solar company Luminia this month to launch Solar Plus Business, a program that installs and maintains solar panels and battery storage at commercial properties completely free. The catch? There isn't one.

Here's how it works: Luminia installs, owns, and maintains the solar systems at participating businesses. Clean Energy Alliance then purchases the power and delivers it to customers at reduced rates that appear directly on their San Diego Gas & Electric bill.

The program targets what Luminia CEO David Field calls the "missing middle." These are commercial properties that sit between residential homes and massive utility-scale solar farms, often with acres of unused rooftop space.

Field noticed the opportunity firsthand while flying into Carlsbad's McClellan-Palomar Airport. "Multiple acres of unused space on the rooftops of commercial buildings," he observed, highlighting the untapped potential.

The program solves a common problem for commercial properties. Many buildings are tenant-occupied with short-term leases, making it hard for landlords and renters to agree on expensive solar investments. Solar Plus Business removes that barrier entirely.

Clean Energy Alliance first launched a residential version of the program two years ago. The response was so strong that businesses kept asking when they could participate too.

The Ripple Effect

The partnership delivers benefits beyond just lower energy bills. The battery storage systems provide backup power during grid outages, giving businesses protection against costly downtime.

Local workers win too. Luminia is actively hiring experienced solar installers from the community to handle the installations, keeping jobs and dollars in San Diego County.

"Community choice energy is, by its definition and since its inception, been all about local choice and local control and local benefit," said Clean Energy Alliance CEO Greg Wade.

The program is open to commercial, industrial, municipal, and school district properties in seven member cities: Carlsbad, Del Mar, Escondido, Solana Beach, San Marcos, Oceanside, and Vista. Properties need to meet baseline energy use and site requirements.

Clean Energy Alliance and Luminia project the program could deploy up to 160 megawatts of solar power and 640 megawatt-hours of battery storage capacity across the region. That's enough clean energy to power thousands of buildings while significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Property owners interested in the program can contact Clean Energy Alliance to see if they qualify. The nonprofit wants to educate business owners about the benefits, even if they're unsure whether their property fits the criteria.
