Santa Barbara Adds 15-Minute EV Chargers for Renters

Electric vehicle ownership just became way more realistic for apartment dwellers in Santa Barbara.

The city unveiled four new 400-kilowatt DC fast chargers at Eastside Library this week that can charge an EV in about 15 minutes. That's fast enough to drop off your car, run a quick errand, and come back to a full battery.

For Geordie Scully-Taylor, a policy analyst who lives in Santa Barbara, the speed changes everything. "I can drop my car, charge it, pick up my kid, walk back, and my car is ready to go," he said.

The chargers arrived just in time. More than 60% of Santa Barbara residents rent their homes, which means most don't have access to home charging stations or private garages.

"Renters have a very hard time getting access to charging," said Kristian Hoffland with the city's Energy and Climate Division. That lack of charging access has been a major barrier keeping renters from making the switch to electric.

The city also designed the chargers to be affordable. Charging during midday, when solar electricity floods the grid, costs just 37 cents per kilowatt-hour. That rate ranks among the lowest for public chargers in the Santa Barbara area.

Drivers can start charging with a credit card, mobile app, or RFID card. The stations are powered entirely by carbon-free electricity through Santa Barbara Clean Energy.

The Ripple Effect

This project shows how smart infrastructure can unlock clean transportation for everyone, not just homeowners. When cities place fast, affordable chargers in public spaces like libraries, they remove one of the biggest obstacles to EV adoption.

The $500,000 project received state funding, including money from Senate Bill 1. Santa Barbara residents can also claim up to $4,000 in rebates when buying an electric vehicle, stacking savings that make EVs increasingly competitive with gas-powered cars.

Other California cities are watching closely. If Santa Barbara's model works, expect to see more library parking lots transformed into charging hubs that serve the communities who need them most.

The chargers are open now at Eastside Library, ready to power the next wave of electric drivers.
