SC Middle School Wins National STEAM Excellence Award

A South Carolina middle school is showing the nation what happens when students get to tackle real-world problems through robotics, environmental studies, and creative design.

Carvers Bay Middle School STEAM Academy has been named a New and Emerging Magnet School of Distinction by Magnet Schools of America, the national association for magnet and theme-based schools. The Georgetown County school earned the honor by demonstrating how it raises student achievement, promotes diversity, and creates strong community partnerships.

The secret to their success? Students don't just read about science and technology in textbooks. They build robots that advance to regional competitions, work with organizations like the SC Sea Grant Consortium on environmental projects, and solve engineering challenges that mirror what professionals face every day.

Principal Norine Fraiser says the award confirms what her team already knew. "This recognition reinforces our commitment to breaking down barriers, raising expectations, and ensuring every student can reach their full potential," she explained.

The school combines hands-on project-based learning across science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics to help students develop critical thinking and creativity. Programs like AVID support academic growth for all students, while expanded fine arts opportunities give every child a chance to shine.
