Scientists Discover Dodos Were Actually Smart, Not Stupid

The dodo just got a major reputation upgrade, and it's changing everything we thought we knew about this famous extinct bird.

Scientists in Canada scanned dodo skulls and found zero evidence supporting the "dumb dodo" myth that's persisted for centuries. Their brains were exactly the right size for pigeons and doves, their closest relatives, suggesting normal intelligence for their family.

The real surprise? Dodos might have been nocturnal creatures.

Researchers discovered that the part of the dodo's brain responsible for visual processing was unusually small, similar to birds that are active in the dark. This finding suggests dodos may have spent much of their lives navigating Mauritius under the cover of night, relying less on sight and more on their enhanced sense of smell.

"Our interpretation is that this species was really, really not relying much on sight," said Sara Citron, a doctoral candidate at the University of Lethbridge who led the study. "And the only situation where you're not relying on sight is when there is no light available."

The team compared brain scans from dodo skulls to 36 living species of pigeons and doves. They even examined the extinct Rodrigues solitaire, a close dodo relative that went extinct around the same time but had completely different brain structures suited for daytime activity.

So where did the "stupid dodo" reputation come from? Sailors noticed these birds had no fear of humans and would run toward distressed dodo calls rather than away from danger. But this wasn't stupidity. It was simply evolution on an island without mammalian predators.

Dodos evolved for millions of years on Mauritius without encountering threats like humans, dogs, cats, or rats. When sailors arrived in 1598 with these invasive species, the birds were completely unprepared. Within a century, they were gone.

Why This Inspires

This discovery does more than correct the historical record about one extinct bird. It challenges how we think about endangered animals today.

Citron hopes people will stop viewing the dodo as "a stupid thing that is doomed to go extinct because of how inept it is." Animals facing extinction now often get dismissed the same way, especially when they don't behave like humans expect.

"They are intelligent, they are adapted to their environment for millions of years, and the fact that we are destroying it now doesn't mean that they are stupid or they don't deserve to keep living," Citron explained.

The dodo wasn't built wrong for its world. Our arrival simply changed the rules of survival faster than evolution could adapt.
