Scottish Soccer Fans Donate $15K After Riding School Buses
When Scottish World Cup fans switched from luxury coaches to yellow school buses, they loved the experience so much they donated $15,000 to help Massachusetts students in need. The heartwarming gift proves sometimes the simplest rides create the biggest impact.
More than 560 Scottish soccer fans rode yellow school buses to their World Cup matches in Massachusetts last month, and they loved it so much they left behind a $15,000 gift for students who need it most.
The donation to The Massachusetts Child charity wasn't part of the original plan. Mike Teevan, a Scotsman who organized transportation for fans traveling to Gillette Stadium, initially booked 21 luxury coaches for the journey from Boston.
When one provider pulled out at the last minute, Teevan faced a $14,000 surcharge to replace the buses. Then he discovered another group of Scottish fans were successfully using school buses to reach the stadium.
His passengers were skeptical at first. School buses meant no air conditioning, no bathrooms, and a potentially uncomfortable two-hour ride. But Teevan made the switch anyway to save money.
"Making the change was probably the best thing that could've happened to the day," Teevan said. The bright yellow buses, familiar to Scots mainly through "The Simpsons," became rolling parties with windows down and spontaneous singing breaking out.

The fans made a beer stop along the way, picking up 8,000 cans across both game days. Traffic turned out to be minimal, with the first trip taking just 75 minutes including the beverage detour.
Nobody asked for a refund on their $60 bus tickets despite the vehicle downgrade. Instead, something better happened.
"Because we were on the school buses, I sort of quite quickly had the thought that it would be good to give something back to the kids whose buses we were using," Teevan explained.
The Ripple Effect
The donation will flow through The Massachusetts Child charity, administered by the Massachusetts Teachers Association. The fund provides grants to local school districts for essentials like books, school supplies, and clothing for students facing financial hardship. Last year alone, the charity distributed more than $60,000 across 50 school districts.
"The Tartan Army showed the world what it means to care for one another, to support one another, and to celebrate together," said MTA president Max Page.
The gesture wasn't an isolated incident. A separate group of Scottish fans staying in Providence donated another $10,000 to Hasbro Children's Hospital during their visit.
Scotland's famous "Tartan Army" supporters had already won hearts during their Boston stay with their spirited camaraderie and goodwill. Now they've proven that the best journeys aren't always about comfort but about community and giving back.
