Shipping Industry Cuts Emissions 29% With Cleaner Fuel

Shipping companies now have solid proof they can dramatically reduce their carbon footprint without waiting for future technology.

A comprehensive new study from the Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel found that ships running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) produce up to 29% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than those using traditional marine gas oil. That's a significant jump from the 16% reduction seen in similar research just four years ago.

The improvement comes from better engine technology that reduces methane leaks during operation. When you account for the entire fuel lifecycle from production to use, LNG now delivers up to 25% lower emissions overall.

More than 700 ships worldwide already run on LNG, and this data gives owners confidence to invest in cleaner vessels. The maritime industry carries 90% of global trade but has struggled to find affordable low-carbon alternatives to diesel fuel.

Mark Bell, who leads the industry group, emphasized that shipowners need reliable data to make smart fuel choices. The study underwent rigorous peer review by academics and industry experts to ensure accuracy.

The research covered multiple engine types and fuel production pathways, reflecting real-world conditions rather than best-case scenarios. Updated emissions calculations included medium-speed and low-speed engines across different ship designs.

This progress matters beyond shipping lanes. Ocean freight moves everything from food to medicine to the products we use daily. Cleaner ships mean cleaner supply chains for countless industries.

The same research group plans to release similar assessments for methanol fuel later this year and has already published data on ammonia as a marine fuel option. These studies help the industry compare alternatives and identify which technologies need the most development support.

Having transparent, independent data means companies can invest billions in new ships with confidence they're choosing genuinely cleaner options. It also helps regulators set realistic targets for the industry's path to zero emissions.

The 13-point improvement in just four years shows that maritime emissions technology is advancing faster than many experts predicted.
