Singapore Invests $100M in Maritime Tech and AI Push

Singapore is betting big on the future of shipping, and the payoff could transform how the world moves goods across oceans.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and the Singapore Maritime Institute unveiled a bold five-year roadmap this week, backed by over $100 million in research and development funding. The plan targets four game-changing areas: autonomous port operations, alternative energy delivery systems, smart ships, and intelligent port services.

The timing couldn't be better. Singapore handles some of the world's busiest shipping traffic, but faces real constraints in manpower, land, and sea space that threaten its competitive edge.

The new roadmap directly addresses those challenges through digital innovation and decarbonization. Instead of simply doing more with less, Singapore is reimagining how ports and ships can work smarter through artificial intelligence and automation.

The country isn't just planning for the future. It's already training companies to use AI today.

The Maritime and Port Authority partnered with the Singapore Shipping Association to help shipping companies adopt AI across ship management, chartering, and operations. Twenty-one companies have already started pilot training programs, with wider rollout planned for later this year.

These companies will get access to real-world AI use cases, connections with technology providers, and hands-on opportunities to test applications in their own operations. Singapore is even providing an AI Readiness Index framework so companies can assess their current capabilities and chart their adoption path.

The Ripple Effect

When the world's second-busiest port commits to this level of innovation, the benefits extend far beyond Singapore's shores. More efficient ports mean faster delivery times and lower costs for goods traveling worldwide. Cleaner shipping technologies reduce emissions across global supply chains.

The roadmap builds on lessons learned from Singapore's 2019 maritime technology plan, refined through extensive consultation with industry experts and researchers. A 2025 workshop helped identify priorities across different time horizons, ensuring the plan stays relevant as technology evolves.

Singapore Maritime Week, where the announcement took place, runs through Friday at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre. The complete roadmap is being published as an accessible e-book for industry stakeholders.
