Singapore Invests $1B in AI Research Through 2030

Singapore just made its biggest bet yet on the future of artificial intelligence, committing over $1 billion to AI research and development through 2030.

Minister Josephine Teo announced the National AI Research and Development Plan at Singapore AI Research Week 2026, marking the government's second major AI funding push. The investment doubles their previous commitment of $500 million from 2019 to 2023.

The plan targets three critical areas: fundamental AI research, applied AI in key industries, and talent development at every level. Singapore will establish Research Centres of Excellence at public institutions to tackle challenges like responsible AI, resource-efficient computing, and emerging AI methodologies.

These new centers will join Singapore's existing network of more than 60 AI Centres of Excellence already launched by tech companies with government support. The research teams will collaborate with international partners and share their discoveries openly to advance global knowledge.

The funding will help industries like manufacturing, healthcare, trade, and sustainability adopt AI solutions. Changi Airport's Jewel terminal already showcases this vision in action, using AI for security screening, automated baggage handling, and robotic inspections and cleaning.

The Ripple Effect

Singapore's investment reaches beyond laboratories and boardrooms into classrooms and career paths. The plan expands scholarships and research opportunities for students pursuing competitive PhD, post-doctoral, and faculty positions at top institutions worldwide.

The AI Visiting Professorship program, launched in 2024, brings world-class overseas researchers to Singapore for collaborative projects. Eight projects have already begun, connecting global expertise with local innovation.

This funding commitment positions Singapore to tackle some of AI's thorniest challenges while training the researchers who will shape the technology's future. The timing aligns perfectly with the 40th Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence Conference, bringing together experts from government, research institutions, and industry.

Singapore's approach balances ambitious research goals with practical applications already improving daily life, from airport efficiency to healthcare innovations. The nation is proving that small countries can lead on big technological frontiers when they invest strategically in research, talent, and real-world solutions.
