Singapore Launches AI Visa for Tech Leaders in 2027

Starting January 2027, artificial intelligence experts and tech leaders will have a clearer path to working in Singapore thanks to a new visa program that recognizes how modern innovators get paid.

The ONE Pass (AI and Tech) program replaces the existing Tech.Pass with terms that better reflect today's startup culture. While the old visa required a monthly salary of at least $17,700, the new program accepts a combination of guaranteed salary and stock options to meet its $23,500 monthly threshold.

Manpower Minister Tan See Leng announced the change Tuesday, noting that leading tech talent often receives significant compensation through employee stock options and share ownership plans. The government designed the new visa to acknowledge this reality instead of forcing candidates into traditional salary structures.

The program targets experienced professionals with at least five years in senior technical roles, C-suite positions, or as company founders. Applicants must work for established tech companies with valuations of $500 million or more, annual revenue exceeding $200 million, or startups that have raised at least $30 million in funding.

The biggest upgrade comes in visa duration. The old Tech.Pass lasted just two years with one possible renewal, giving holders only four years maximum. The new ONE Pass grants five years upfront and can be renewed repeatedly in five-year increments.

This change signals Singapore's commitment to becoming a major hub for artificial intelligence and quantum computing research. By making it easier for top talent to put down roots, the city-state is creating conditions for breakthrough innovations that could benefit people worldwide.

The Economic Development Board approved about 250 Tech.Pass applications by July 2022, proving demand for such programs. The enhanced ONE Pass should attract even more innovators who might have previously chosen other tech hubs.
