Singapore Training 100,000 Workers in AI Skills by 2026

Imagine being fluent in both your profession and the technology reshaping it. That's exactly what Singapore is betting on with its bold new workforce initiative.

The Singapore government unveiled plans to train 100,000 workers to become "AI Bilingual" through its National AI Impact Programme. Digital Development Minister Josephine Teo explained the concept simply: workers won't need to become AI engineers, but they will learn to blend AI capabilities with their existing expertise.

"AI know-how, domain expertise and human touch are a powerful combination," Teo told the Committee of Supply Debate in March 2026. The program aims to create pathfinders who can show others how meaningful AI upskilling works in the real world.

Singapore isn't starting from scratch. The city-state already leads Asia in AI adoption, with 60.9% of its working-age population using AI tools. That puts Singapore second globally, thanks to years of early investment in AI infrastructure and research.

The new initiative will expand through TechSkills Accelerator, an existing program that develops tech talent for Singapore's digital economy. Accounting and legal professionals will be first in line, followed by human resources and other fields highly exposed to AI disruption.

The focus goes beyond basic training. Tech workers will learn to move from writing code to orchestrating complete AI-powered systems. Professional bodies and government agencies will partner to tailor training for each field's specific needs.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't just about keeping up with technology. Minister Teo sees AI as the key to sustaining wage growth and productivity improvements across Singapore's economy. When workers can leverage AI in their domains, they become more valuable and efficient.

The program tackles a challenge facing workers worldwide: how to stay relevant as AI transforms every industry. By focusing on professions that serve multiple sectors, Singapore's approach could create a multiplier effect throughout its economy.

The government is also putting itself to the test. "The government must walk the talk and practice what it preaches," Teo said in a January interview. Officials are building their own AI capabilities while providing infrastructure, fostering practice communities, and maintaining regulations that encourage innovation.

Singapore's success as Asia's most dynamic AI hub after China shows what early commitment can achieve, and now 100,000 workers will get the chance to ride that wave forward.
