Singapore's Agnes AI Cracks Global Top 10 Lab Rankings

Singapore just proved that small nations can build world-class AI without billion-dollar budgets or Silicon Valley addresses. Agnes AI, a homegrown artificial intelligence company, has become the first Singapore-born AI lab to crack the global top 10 rankings on international benchmarks, competing directly with giants like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.

The company achieved top 10 placements across three categories: text processing, image editing, and video generation. Every model was conceived, built, and trained entirely in Singapore without relying on borrowed frameworks or open-source shortcuts.

Bruce Yang, Agnes AI's CEO, sees this as proof that Singapore's National AI Strategy 2.0 is working. "Singapore's ambition was to be a builder of AI, not merely an adopter of it," Yang said. "These benchmark results show that ambition is being realized."

The achievement matters beyond bragging rights. Agnes AI is making its full production suite available for free during a limited period, giving developers and businesses access to the same models that earned those global rankings.

The company has also joined Singapore's National AI Impact Program, a government-backed initiative led by the Infocomm Media Development Authority and AI Singapore. Through this partnership, Agnes AI will help upskill 40,000 technology professionals across the country, giving them hands-on experience with frontier-level AI built in their own backyard.

The Ripple Effect

The pricing structure could reshape how businesses access advanced AI. Agnes AI charges $0.03 per million input tokens for text processing, roughly half the cost of competitors. For video generation, it charges $0.30 per minute compared to the industry range of $2 to $30 per minute.

That means top 10 global performance at less than one-tenth the typical cost. For small businesses and startups across Southeast Asia, that gap could mean the difference between affording AI tools or getting priced out entirely.

Senior Minister of State Tan Kiat How attended the official unveiling, signaling strong government support for homegrown AI development. The company trained its models at the National University of Singapore, keeping the entire development process local.

Agnes AI's mission centers on what it calls "AI inclusion and parity," ensuring that advanced AI capabilities reach beyond large enterprises with massive budgets. By opening free access to production-grade models and joining the national upskilling program, the company is putting that mission into practice.

Singapore is showing the world that you don't need to be a superpower to build frontier technology that matters.
