Sioux Falls Stampede Win First Championship in 7 Years

When Joey Macrina fired the puck past the goalie in the second overtime Saturday night, he gave Sioux Falls something the city had been waiting seven years to celebrate.

The Stampede claimed their fourth Clark Cup championship with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Muskegon, capping a nearly perfect season that saw them win 52 games without ever losing more than two in a row. The team faced elimination four times during their 14-game playoff grind and came back stronger each time.

The championship-winning moment started with goalie Linards Feldbergs making a spectacular leg-splitting glove save. Macrina grabbed the loose puck and raced up the ice on a two-on-one break, then buried the game-winner himself.

"As soon as Joey crossed the blue line, I knew the Clark Cup was ours," said alternate captain Logan Renkowski. "As soon as he scored, I blacked out."

Three days later, fans packed The Birdcage for a victory celebration where players and coaches reflected on their journey. The team had built something special throughout the season with a balanced mix of veterans and young players who refused to quit.

The Ripple Effect

The championship victory caps an incredible tradition in Sioux Falls. For the 13th consecutive season, the Stampede led all of American junior hockey in home attendance, averaging 5,107 fans per game at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.

Coach Ryan Cruthers credited the fanbase for pushing his team to victory. "Our fans, when they showed up to Lincoln and to Fargo, that's the reason we won," he said during the celebration.

When Cruthers arrived two years ago, his mission was restoring pride in the Stampede logo. The 41-year-old coach barely slept in the 72 hours after the championship, spending his time thanking each player individually for their contributions.

Feldbergs, who Cruthers called the best player in the league all season, proved his coach right when it mattered most. Despite receiving no all-league honors in April, the Merrimack-bound goalie dominated in the playoffs with a 9-5 record and 1.91 goals-against average.

The Stampede's consistency made them a model franchise in the USHL, finishing with the second-best offense and third-best defense during the regular season. They found ways to score throughout their lineup and never wavered under pressure.

Little Sioux Falls now stands as the standard-bearer of junior hockey in America, and this championship season gave the city a party worth remembering.
