Six Charles County Students Honored for Academic Excellence

Six students in Charles County, Maryland walked into their school board meeting as role models and left as officially recognized champions of achievement.

The Board of Education honored students from elementary through high school on March 10, celebrating everything from perfect attendance attitudes to impressive GPAs. Among them was fifth grader Zi'Eir Bannister, who has attended Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Elementary since prekindergarten and now plays in the school band while serving on both math and MESA teams.

Alexander Barnes, another fifth grader, balances academic excellence with some unique hobbies. When he's not serving as a school ambassador at Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer Elementary, he's exploring beekeeping and strengthening his faith through singing.

Fifth grader Eleijah Murray already knows exactly what she wants to be: an international biologist researching plants and animals around the world. She spends her free time studying the natural world around her and performing with the Children's Voices of Southern Maryland.

Milan Hewlett brings the same dedication to her studies that she brings to elite gymnastics. The Thornton Elementary student participates in newspaper club, all-county chorus, safety patrol, and the step team while dreaming of becoming either a gymnast or an emergency surgeon.

At Matthew Henson Middle School, eighth grader ZouZou Ziden excels in accelerated math, honors English, and honors science. Teachers describe her quiet confidence and gentle presence as the kind of character they hope to nurture in every student.

Sophomore Jonah Iman Jr. maintains a 3.78 GPA at Robert D. Stethem Educational Center while taking honors classes. The honor roll student creates art and writes in his free time, with eyes set on the publishing industry or becoming an artist after graduation.

Why This Inspires

These students prove that excellence looks different for everyone. Whether it's beekeeping, gymnastics, or researching plants in the backyard, young people are finding their passions early and pursuing them with remarkable dedication.

Their schools didn't just recognize test scores. They celebrated students who show up with positive attitudes, help their peers, and already know how they want to serve their communities. From future firefighters to aspiring surgeons, these kids are thinking beyond themselves.
